Scottish anchorages

Best beaches

Sandy beaches, particularly wide bays open to the west, and good anchorages do not always go well together, and most of the beaches hereabouts are on the islands rather than the mainland. So what are you after? I am not sure how to guide you to what you might want but here is a rough classification of some nice beaches (I have ignored the not so nice beaches although they are mentioned on the anchorage pages):

Wide open classic beaches for rushing into the waves (and rushing back because it is so bloody cold):

Kiloran bay on Colonsay must be the best but the least likely for a quiet anchorage, followed by Calgary bay in the west of Mull. Other good ones include Balnahard bay on Colonsay which is quite a walk in for those on the island so it is not crowded, and Loch Buie on the south eastern corner of Mull which is very deserted, and the so-called Singing Sands on Eigg.

Small 'domestic' beaches for pootling about:

Take your pick really. I like best the two beaches on Canna but then there is also Castle Sween on Loch Sween (crowded), Loch Breachacha and Sorisdale on Coll which are both quite remote, Loch Staosnaig on Colonsay and the adjacent tidal island of Oronsay, Ardminish Bay and Eilean Garbh on Gigha, Loch Cuan on the west coast of Mull and at the Bull Hole, Sanna Bay on Ardnamurchan, Kilnaughton Bay on Islay, Martyr's Bay on Iona (crowded) as well as Traigh Ban nam Manach, and the small beaches by the main anchorage on Eigg.

Beaches hard to get to except by boat:

Bagh Gleann nam Muc at the north end of Jura, the Creag islands in Lower Loch Linnhe, the small islands in Cragaig Bay on Ulva, Port nan Crullach near Croggan on Mull, and probably best of all David Balfour's Bay on Erraid.

Putting the kids in wetsuits, and yourself too, transforms the possibilities.
