Loch Linnhe

It is tremendously dramatic to sail up Loch Linnhe on a good day. The views as you approach and sail up the loch are awesome with of course Ben Nevis a looming lump at the end. And wonderful mountains all around with beautiful broad leaf woods, particularly on the east side. But there are surprisingly few anchorages north of Lismore, at least delightful ones, even up Loch Leven which gets more dramatic with views up Glen Coe to the well known mountains - Bidean, the Ballachulish horseshoe and so on. But there are some pretty impressive places to eat and one could even construct a rather good week-long gastronomic cruise taking in the Pierhouse and Airds Hotel in Appin (one on the way there, the other on the way back), the Holly Tree House Hotel in Kentallen, the Loch Leven Seafood café, and the Crannog and the Lemon Tree in Fort William. Other than local boats, I suspect the few boats you see are on their way to or from the Caledonian Canal.

Loch Linnhe splits conveniently into the Lower Loch from the Sound of Mull to the Corran narrows, and then the Upper Loch to Fort William and beyond.
